How Do Cats Get Fleas? Tips to Get Rid of Them Naturally

Most cat owners believe that if they keep their feline friends indoors, they will be protected from flea infestation. Unfortunately, fleas can still get into a house through various ways. For instance, they can hitch a ride through your plants, your clothing, shoes, or even you hair to get inside your property. If you have pests at home, such as cats, they will be more vulnerable to fleas since they have a higher body temperature than humans.

How Can Cats Get Fleas?

From Other Animals: Fleas can also be found on rabbits, rodents, and birds. The adult fleas will use any animal as a host and will hitch a ride to get from one site to another. If an animal carries an adult flea, the pest can jump from one warm body to another. In fact, even you can unwittingly transfer an adult flea to your cat indoors because you have passed an area infested with fleas. As a tip, try not to let your cat associate with wild or stray animals, since they are more likely to carry fleas.

From Flea Eggs: These blood-sucking pests lay their eggs on their hosts; however, the eggs will fall off the animal to the soil, plants, floorboards, carpeting, or animal cages. These eggs are also very durable and they cannot be destroyed except by disastrous methods such as fire. With that said, flea treatment needs to be repeated about two weeks later to ensure that the larvae are killed after the initial treatment.

From Infected Bedding: Fleas can also reside and hide in bedding, cat toys, or gardens. For this reason, before you bring anything to your house or when buying cat furniture and bed, you must treat it for fleas.

Tips To Rid Your Cat Of Fleas

Bathe Your Cat: Although many cats hate the idea of getting a bath, it is still crucial to keep them clean and sanitary. You must use a gentle shampoo and wash their neck first. Doing so will keep the fleas from jumping towards their head while bathing. Be very thorough since you might find several fleas come off and float around the water.

Herbal Treatment: You can also make an herbal flea treatment. What you need are two cups of fresh rosemary leaves and two pints of water. Mix them together and boil for about half an hour. Separate the leaves from the liquid through straining. After doing so, you must then mix the liquid to a gallon of lukewarm water. Pour this over your cat until saturated. Do not rinse your cat and instead allow her to air dry.

Use A Flea Comb: When your cat is all dry, you can use a flea comb since this can further remove fleas.

Use Yeast: Fleas do not like the taste of yeast. With that said, you can rub yeast onto your cat's fur. You can also sprinkle a small amount onto their food. Consult your veterinarian if mixing a small amount of yeast onto your cat's food won't damage her metabolic system.

Flea Collar: Another tip is to add two to three drops of lemon mixture on your cat's collar. This can keep fleas off of them. Remember though not to use essential oils on your cat since she might have a hard time ingesting or absorbing the oil through her skin.
