It is alarming how many websites you can go on and the author claims that their site's experts reviewed these pet foods and so and so are the best ones on the market. Yet, there are no credentials posted. So we, as pet owners, are just supposed to take their word for it? How do we even know that these sites are not owned by the pet food companies, or sponsored by them?

Not every site is like that but it is important to realize that this is a very real possibility. Another aspect to look out for is the pet food company's own website. Of course they will positively review their own products. It is good to know that they are not afraid of hiding ingredients and actively list them, but at the same time be careful of bias.

This is why it is important to do some of your own research before you actively seek out cat food ratings. If you do not know what you are looking for, you can easily fall victim to good marketing.

So what makes a good cat food then?

You should always look at the ingredients first. The first ingredient listed should be a good protein source. Cats are carnivores. They eat meat. After the first ingredient, you would like to see additional meat ingredients listed several times after the first ingredient. Even if the first ingredient listed is a meat source, and the next several are grain sources, it isn't a great cat food. That means that there is more grain than meat in the food. And as mentioned, cats eat meat. There is no need for grain in their food.

Another key factor is choosing a cat food from a reputable company. This may seem like an obvious one, but you'd be shocked. On the label, it should say that the food meets AAFCO standards for a complete and balanced diet. This is the MINIMUM requirements for feline nutrition. So if the cat food you are currently buying doesn't have this standard, that's a problem. It means that your cat isn't even getting the minimal nutritional content it should be getting.

Good cat food ratings can come a little easier if you have trustworthy help. Sometimes, as pet owners, we just cannot learn everything. There are so many brands out there and so much to know. Luckily, there are cat food ratings sites out there that can help you by giving you completely unbiased ratings on many cat foods. This comes in handy when you are trying to give your pet the best and safest food possible, yet just don't have the time to learn every little detail on the 1000s of products out there.
