How To Find What Breeds Your Dog Is Mixed With

There are thousands of dogs that are adopted from animal shelters every year. Generally most of them are mixed breeds. So it is natural for the dog owners to be curious about their dog/'s background. It is not uncommon for people with mixed breed dog, to play guessing games to figure out what is possible heritage of their dog. You can look for many obvious signs such as type of ears your dog has, color of the coat, type of the coat, size of your dog and so on. You may be even looking at if your mixed breed dog has any particular talents like herding or retrieving.

If you are really eager to find out your dog's heritage, you can go for some genetic testing which helps determine what kind of breeds possibly in your dog's background. A test called "The Canine Heritage Breed Test" was released in 2007. It was established by a company named "MetaMorphix". The cost of the test is around $75. The company's website claims you can just ask for the test kit and swab inside of your dog's cheek with the swab inside the kit to get DNA. Then you just mail the kit back to the company. You will receive the result within four to six weeks. Together with the result you are provided with "Certificate Of DNA Breed Analysis" to be framed.

Still, there are some shortcomings of this testing. Presently, this company deals with the most common breeds only. So if your mixed breed dog comes from an uncommon breed ancestor, it is more likely the test is unable to detect the actual breed and end up substituting other breed instead.

A lot of people who have registered purebred dogs have also tried the test and found out the test results were inaccurate. Therefore, it brought up some doubt about the accuracy of the test.

Actually a reporter had his dog tested twice and received different result each time. It is the same dog but different result, which raises questions about the accuracy of the test.

Another test called " The Wisdom Panel TIMMX Mixed Breed Analysis Test" claims they offer test results based on 157 breeds. They claim accuracy rate as high as 90 %. Their test relies on a blood test. A vet can collect a small blood sample from your dog and then Wisdom Panel test it. The cost is $124.99 online, and selected vet clinics and some pet retailers are dealing with it. After purchasing the kit you take it to a vet and get your dog's blood sample.

There is another product called "Canine Heritage XL" which relays on a cheek swab. They say they offer DNA technology which Is SNP- based and can identify more than 100 breeds.

Although it may be useful for the owner of a mixed breed dog to know his dog's background, particularly for health reasons, you need to keep in mind that those tests can only provide brief idea of possible heritage of your dog. They are not the same level of DNA tests which determine the paternity. They may be able to detect that your dog is part collie, but unable to tell if the father is your neighbor's collie. If you would like to know about the paternity of your dog, you need to have a different type of DNA test which take DNA samples from your dog and a dog of possible parent.

Some suggest breed heritage tests for a way of ruling out certain types of dogs. Then again, these tests are not sophisticated enough to identify specific breeds. All they can do is suggest possible mixes of breeds. And, remember at present, there are still some questions about the accuracy of the test.
