Bad Dogs or Bad Owners?

There's no such thing as a bad dog, only bad dog owners. True or False? Many animal trainers and professionals would espouse that this is true. However; if you are a victim of a dog attack, do you really care if it's a bad dog or a bad owner? The bite injuries are the same either way. It's important to know why a canine attacks in the first place. Maybe knowing the why can help prevent a future attack.

Fear: aggression is often caused by a variety of factors such as unexpectedly quick movements, a loud noise, or approaching the dog when it can't see you. Use caution when waking a sleeping animal. Anxious or nervous dogs are most liable to attack from a position of fear.

Protection: A pet may attack if they are feeling threatened, or if their property or family is perceived to be under attack. It can be as simple as taking a toy from the dog, or hugging a family member. Never approach an animal who is eating, they will be protective of their food.;

Waking up unexpectedly: Let sleeping dogs lie is good advice. Never abruptly wake an animal who is dozing. A startled dog is one who can attack

Playtime: Too much of a good thing - like playing - can over excite, and end up with really rough play which can turn into a bad attack. Play, have fun, but know when enough is enough.

Sick or injured animals: when hurt or sick, they are not going to be overly patient. Less so, actually. Use caution around any animal who has been injured or is sick. You may be trying to help, but the dog may not know that. The dog may be confused about the pain or discomfort, and associate it with you.

Nursing Females: Be particularly quiet and slow moving around a new mother with young pups. She may be highly sensitive and fearful for her pups and react with aggression.

Dogs can truly be man's best friend, or man's worst nightmare. An untrained or poorly trained dog is a potential danger to us all. Proper socialization of dogs will help greatly, but it is important to remember that a dog is still an animal, no matter how much we feel that they are family. A dog's wild instincts will take priority in certain situations, no matter how loyal and loving the dog has been previously. It is in their nature to dominate in order to survive.

Knowing a few basic reasons about why dogs bite can help to avoid possible dog bite attacks. Things such as taking a toy away from the dog, or hugging a family member can be interpreted as an aggressive act. Never approach a dog who is eating, they will be protective of their food. Remember that even though you love your dog like family, they are still just a dog.
