Cat Body Language Identifying Your Cat's Movements and Behaviour

Have you ever wondered what your cat is saying? I'm sure most pet owners have from time to time. When you learn how to read body language you can! Pay close attention to what her tail, ears, and fur are doing and you can read their emotions.

Your cats' tail is the most important part to watch to determine your cats feelings. You can determine whether or not your cat is happy or not by studying her tail.

Tail straight up: When your cat is walking toward you and her tail is straight up it is a sign of friendliness, this is her way of greeting you in a friendly manner.

Tail straight up and quivering: When your cat displays this she is very happy to see you, but if your cat is a male be cautious he may be getting ready to mark his territory if you get too close you may regret it.

Tail straight up but with a hook: This is usually seen when she is seeing an unfamiliar person or when approached by another cat. When you see this she is prepared to be friendly but prepared to defend herself as well.

Tail straight up and puffed: Look out because your cat is annoyed, angry, or startled. Better give some time to calm down before approaching her.

Tail straight up and at a slight angle: She is unsure, prepared to be friendly but also ready to run away or if necessary to fight.

Tail straight out and down: This cat is ready to fight, it could be she is ready to play but usually you can tell which one very quickly. So be very cautious when you see this behavior.

Tail goes up and then hangs down: Your cat is getting ready if necessary to defend herself.

Tail is tucked in: Your cat is scared, if she isn't cornered she will probably run away, if cornered she will probably fight.

Tail thrashing: Large slow swings usually mean she is excited but smaller swings and rapidly moving shows anger.

Your cat's ears are also a way of telling your cat's emotional state. while not as obvious as the tail when reading both the tail and ears together you can get a better picture of how your cat feels.

If your cat's ears are back this usually means aggression, if they are both up and back this usually means a challenge is being given.

When your cat's ears are out she is either afraid or very unhappy, if the ears go back even more she is threatened and may react with aggression.

There are other signs your cat may give you such as purring, kneading, and rubbing with her head of face which we all know is a sign of affection, but rubbing the head or face is also her way of reinforcing her bond with you by transferring some of her scent to you. Rubbing around your legs is also thought of as affection which of course it is but again she is bonding with you by getting her scent on you.
